Description
Sildenafil is a medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. When a man is sexually stimulated, sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps in achieving and maintaining an erection.

Sildenafil inhibits the enzyme PDE5, which is responsible for the breakdown of a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). By inhibiting PDE5, sildenafil increases the levels of cGMP, leading to relaxation of the blood vessels in the penis and improved blood flow.

Sildenafil is taken orally in the form of tablets. It is typically taken about 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual activity. The medication's effects can last for approximately 4 to 6 hours, although this can vary from person to person.
