Edit for headphones. Written (it took him only a few hours) and recorded by John Denver in 1966 as a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio, the song was released as a single in 1969 by Peter, Paul and Mary and it became a # 1 hit in the US. John started his solo career in the seventies, recorded his own version for his debut solo album "Rhymes & Reasons" and re-recorded the song in 1973 for "John Denver’s Greatest Hits". This one is from his 2 cd album "The Essential John Denver", which I think is by far the best version.

LEAVING ON A JET PLANE (original title: Babe, I hate to go)
(John Denver)

All my bags are packed
I’m ready to go
I’m standing here outside the door
I hate to wake you up, to say goodbye

But the dawn is breaking
it’s early mor’n
and the taxi is waiting he has blown his horn
already I’m so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you’ll wait for me
hold me like you’ll never let me go

Cause I’m leaving on a jetplane
don’t know when I’ll be back again
oh babe I hate to go

There are so many times I let you down
so many times I played around
I tell you now they don’t mean a thing

Every place I go I think of you
every song I sing I sing for you
when I come back I’ll bring your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you’ll wait for me
hold me like you’ll never let me go

Cause I’m leaving on a jetplane
don’t know when I’ll be back again
oh babe I hate to go

Now the time has come to leave you
one more time let me kiss you
and close your eyes I’ll be on my way
dream about the days to come
when I wont have to leave alone
about the times I won’t have to say

Oh kiss me and smile for me
tell me that you’ll wait for me
hold me like you’ll never let me go

Cause I’m leaving on a jetplane
don’t know when I’ll be back again
oh babe I hate to go

I’m leaving on a jetplane
don’t know when I’ll be back again
oh babe I hate to go.
