Among the Indians there have been no written laws.
Customs handed down from generation to generation
have been the only laws to guide them. Every one might
act different from what was considered right did he
choose to do so, but such acts would bring upon him the
censure of the Nation.... This fear of the Nation's censure
acted as a mighty band, binding all in one social, honorable
compact.

What is life? It is the flash
of a firefly in the night. It is
the breath of a buffalo in the
wintertime. It is the little
shadow which runs across
the grass and loses itself in
the sunset.

The animals had rights - the right
of man’s protection, the right to
live, the right to multiply, the right
to freedom, and the right to man’s
indebtedness - and in recognition
of these rights the people never
enslaved an animal, and spared all
life that was not needed for food
and clothing.This concept of life
and its relations with humanizing,
and gave to the people an abiding
love. It filled his being with joy and
mystery of living; it gave him
reverence for all life; it made a
place for all things in the scheme
of existence with equal importance
to all.

Chief Luther Standing Bear

The Animals

We gather our minds together to
send greetings and thanks to all
the Animal life in the world.
They have many things to teach
us as people. We see them near
our homes and in the deep forests.
We are glad that they are still
here and we hope that it will
always be so. Now our minds are
one.

I have carried a heavy load on my back ever since I was a boy. I realized then that we could not hold our own with the white men. We were like deer. They were like grizzly bears. We had small country. Their country was large. We were contented to let things remain as the Great Spirit Chief made them. They were not, and would change the rivers and mountains if they did not suit them.

Chief Joseph – Nez Perce

Only to the white man was nature a wilderness and only to him was the land ’infested’ with ’wild’ animals and ’savage’ people. To us it was tame, Earth was bountiful and we were surrounded with the blessings of the Great Mystery.
