Description
Simple Minds is a Scottish group in New Wave, pop rock, post-punk, alternative rock genres. The roots of Simple Minds are in the short-lived punk band Johnny & The Self-Abusers, founded on the South Side of Glasgow (Scotland) in 1977. The band was conceived by Glasgow scenemaker Alan Cairnduff, although he left the job to his friend John Milarky who teamed up with two musicians he had never worked with before – budding singer and lyricist Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill. Kerr and Burchill had known each other since the age of eight.
The core of the band is the two remaining founder members, Jim Kerr (vocals, songwriting) and Charlie Burchill (guitars, keyboards after 1990, other instruments, songwriting, vocals). The other current band members are Ged Grimes (Bass guitar, vocals), Sarah Brown (backing vocals), Gordy Goudie (keyboards, guitar, vocals), Cherisse Osei (Drummer) and Erik Ljunggren (keyboards).
.
Simple Minds have achieved 24 top 40 singles on the UK Singles Chart, and 23 top 40 albums on the UK Albums Chart, including 5 N°1 albums : Sparkle in the Rain (1984), Once Upon a Time (1985), Live in the City of Light (1987), Street Fighting Years (1989), and Glittering Prize 81/92 (1992). They have sold more than 60 million albums worldwide, and are the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s.
